Chemical Glossary

CAS Number: 118-74-1. A white, crystalline solid which is not
very soluble in water. It is formed as a by-product in the
manufacture of other chemicals. Hexachlorobenzene was also used
as a pesticide until 1965. It was also used in fireworks,
ammunitions and in the production of rubber. There are no
current commercial uses of the substance. Chemical formula =
C6Cl6. Molecular weight = 284.79 g/mol.

CAS Number: 121-14-2. A yellow needle-shaped solid with slight
odor. A major use of 2,4-dinitrotoluene is in making
2,4-diaminotoluene. Dinitrotoluenes are also used in organic
synthesis, dyes, explosives and as a propellant additive.
Chemical formula = C7H6N2O4. Molecular weight = 182.14 g/mol.

CAS Number: 106-50-3. An off-white crystal or powder. Most
commonly used in hair dyes, and as a dye intermediate. It is
also used as a photographic developing agent and a chemical
intermediate and as a vulcanization accelerator and as an
antioxidant in rubber compounds. Prlonged skin contact is not
recommended because the compound is known to cause skin
irriations in humans. Chemical Formula = C6H8N. Molecular weight
= 108.4 g/mol.

Also known as: Cresol (mixed isomers). CAS Number: 1319-77-3. Any
of several acids derived from petroleum and coal tar that boil
above 204°C and contain varying amounts of xylene and cresol.
They are used in disinfectants, solvents, and electrical
insulation. Chemical formula = C7H8O. Molecular weight = 108.14
g/mol.

Also known as: Pyrocatechol. CAS Number: 120-80-9. Used as a
topical antiseptic, antifungal preservative on seed potato
pieces, photographic developer, a developer in fur dyes, an
intermediate for antioxidants in rubber and lubricating oils, and
in pharmaceuticals. Chemical formula = C6H6O. Molecular weight =
110.11 g/mol.

CAS Number: 51-28-5. A yellow crystalline solid, often found
in solution. It is used in dyes, photo developers, explosives,
pesticides, and as a preservative of lumber. Chemical formula =
C6H4N2O5. Molecular weigth = 184.11 g/mol.

CAS Number: 100-02-7. A colorless to light yellow, odorless,
crystalline solid used to manufacture drugs, fungicides,
insecticides, and dyes and to darken leather. Chemical formula =
C6H5NO3. Molecular weight = 139.11 g/mol.

CAS Number: 106-44-5. Chemical formula = CH3C6H4OH. Molecular
weight = 108.14 g/mol.

CAS Number: 95-48-7. Chemical formula = C7H8O. Molecular weight
= 108.2 g/mol.

CAS Number: 193-39-5. A polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)
that is a by-product of the combustion of coal, wood, gasoline,
municipal waste, and cigarette smoke. IP has also been found in
gasoline, fresh and used motor oil, and road runoff. Chemical
formula = C22H12. Molecular weight = 276.34 g/mol.
