Chemical Glossary

CAS Number: 7439-92-1. A bluish-white, soft, heavy, metallic
element found mostly in combination with other metals, and used
especially in pipes, cable sheaths, batteries, solder, and
shields against radioactivity. Chemical symbol = Pb. Molecular
weight = 207.2 g/mol.

CAS Number: 10028-15-6. A triatomic, very reactive form of
oxygen that is a bluish, irritating gas of pungent odor. It is
formed naturally in the atmosphere by a photochemical reaction.
It is a major air pollutant in the lower atmosphere but a
beneficial component of the upper atmosphere. Ozone is used for
oxidizing, bleaching, disinfecting, and deodorizing. Chemical
formula = O3. Molecular weight = 47.998 g/mol.

CAS Number: 7440-65-5. A highly crystalline, dark gray metal.
Yttrium is largely used in its oxide form, yttria (YxO3), which
is used to make red phosphors for color television picture tubes.
It is also used in small amounts as a metal alloy. Chemical
formula = Y. Molecular weight = 88.906 g/mol.

CAS Number: 7440-67-7. A grayish-white, shiny metal that is used
in the manufacture of cast iron and steel, as well as the
production os surgical appliances and superconductive magnets.
The oxide form of Zirconium (zircon) has a high index of
refraction and is therefore used as a gem. Chemical formula = Zr.
Molecular weight = 91.22 g/mol.

CAS Number: 7782-49-2. A metallic gray solid used heavily in the
production of glass, pigments, rubber, metal alloys,
petrochemicals and photographic chemicals. Chemical formula = Se.
Molecular weight = 78.996 g/mol +/- 3 g.

CAS Number: 7440-32-6. A shiny, dark gray metal that is used
extensively in industrial applications and in steel and aluminum
alloys. Titanium is probably best known for its use in surgical
implants. It is also used for treatment of some skin disorders.
Chemical formula = Ti. Molecular weight = 47.90 g/mol.

CAS Number: 7440-66-6. A bluish, pale gray metal that is an
essential nutrient in mammals. Thin layers of zinc are used to
galvanize iron or steel, which protect the underlying metal from
rusting. Zinc is also used in brass, bronze and nickel alloys,
and can be found in solder, cosmetics and pigments. Chemical
formula = Zn. Molecular weight = 65.409 g/mol.
