Acrolein is primarily used as an intermediate in the
manufacture of acrylic acid. It can be formed from the
breakdown of certain pollutants in outdoor air or from burning
tobacco or gasoline. It is extremely toxic to humans from
inhalation and dermal exposure. Acute (short-term) inhalation
exposure may result in upper respiratory tract irritation and
congestion. No information is available on its reproductive,
developmental, or carcinogenic effects in humans. The animal
cancer data are limited, with one study reporting an increased
incidence of adrenocortical tumors in rats exposed to acrolein
in the drinking water. EPA considers acrolein a possible human
carcinogen (Group C).
